I didn't have any 5/16" tubing which would have much easier. I thought about using rubbing alcohol as a lube and that might make it easier. It was very tight and I haven't used heat on it yet. On my Teac A-4010, the spindles are about 1/4" in diameter and I was able to actually push 1/4" tubing on, by slowly pushing the end of the tubing, while pushing with a thumb and forefinger along the shaft with the other hand. This will tighten the rubber knobs considerably. Place the tubing over the spindle and shrink it in place with a lighter or other heat source. Now measure the diameter of the spindle and select some heat shrink tubing that is larger than that diameter, but much less than twice as large. Your measurement should stop just where the spindle starts to change to the rounded end. Measure the length of the spindle, from the three ridges that engage the tape reel, to just short of the spindle end. If your reel holders have become that loose try this. It's nasty to have a reel of tape depart the machine when rewinding a tape. For those of you that have worn rubber reel holders here is one solution.
